Most of it was shot in the summer in the very early hours of the morning. They also closed off some areas such as picadilly circus, They were only allowed to do 1 take so it all had to be perfect.... Also part of the motorway was closed when they done the motorway scene

They shut down parts of London and made all traffic of all kinds stay out of the area.
The people working on it kept complaining and ranting because of the birds. Those birds flying around,.. those are really there,.. they couldn't be controled.. they are wild birds. They were mad because all the birds were supposed to have left, died, or been infected so they just kept ranting about this because they filmed some scenes so many times trying to get a good take without the birds. They finally gave up because they just couldn't manage it.

They knew a certain part of the day when that part of area was near desolate. As with the film The Omega Man, it was shot without any stopping of traffic.
Incredible sequence and fascinating that they managed to do that this way.

Yes, they shot at dawn and held traffic. (for the first scene where he crosses the bridge into the square).
Some other scenes they held traffic for moments and then digitally blocked out visible unwanted background (ie: the traffic in the OTHER direction on the highway when they leave town in the taxi, etc.)

They blocked off certain parts of the city and diverted traffic. I really didn't like that movie. I just hate it when people's rationalization is stupid. You're going to repopulate the earth with one woman and a ten year old girl, when only England and maybe Scotland has died off?
