My doctor told me the same thing three days before I had my first child. For some people it means it's a ways off. Just relax and use this time to prepare for the baby and for the lack of sleep you will get when you bring baby home. Make meals and freeze them, clean the house, take a walk, address envelopes for announcements, anything to make these days go faster.

It means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Which is why most caregivers, particularly outside the US do NOT (I repeat NOT) check dilation until labour is well progressed.

You can be 5cm dilated and 90% effaced for weeks or even months, and you can be 0cm and 0% with a baby that hasn't even dropped and go into labour that day and give birth 5 hours later.

I was told the same thing 12 HOURS before giving birth to my first. Everyone is different, the only reason I was checked is that I had been having braxton hicks contractions for 3 days straight.
