Is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil a safe place to visit during winter break???

Rio is a beautiful city and definetely worth visiting (though I might be a little biased, since that's where my family is from). Like some of the previous answerers said, Rio is like many other large cities in the world. Here are a few guidelines:
You don't want to be conspicuous. One way or another, any Brazilian can spot a tourist from miles away, so you should be aware of how you dress. Don't wear big watches, new Nike shoes, flashy clothes, your camera around your neck, or anything that could have any value in the black market. Also, avoid wondering around aimlessly. If you don't know where you are going, you are a prime target. Find out before-hand how much things should cost on average (taxi cabs, a beer, etc.), so you don't get ripped off. One of the most important things (that is particular to Rio) is that, as a rule of thumb, avoid going uphill. I know this sounds funny, but the hills are where most of the favelas (slums) are located. Have a local guide you around whenever you can.
That being said, if you are aware of your surroundings and are careful, you should be OK.
Oh, and be prepared for scorching wheather. But bring a couple of sweaters just in case. I heard the weather has been a little crazy. You also never know, you could end up going somewhere colder.

Rio is perfectly safe at any time of the year. Just be aware it is a huge city with over 9m people, and as such, there are places to avoid, just like in any big city in the world.
As a tourist, do not stay in Copacabana. Although it has a fantastic tourist infra-structure with good Hotels and cheap restaurants, it is also where muggers and prostitutes will concentrate. Instead stay in Ipanema, Leblon or Barra da Tijuca, the latter being a less touristy area, nonetheless, very beautiful with the best beaches in town. In fact this is where the locals go. There are plenty of restaurants and night life just about everywhere you go.

However, don't; be put off by Copacabana's muggers. It is also a beautiful place certainly worthy of a visit. Generally in Rio, locals do not display wealth or money. Just do that and you will blend in no matter if you look like like a tourist or not. People from Rio were recently voted the most friendly on earth, the city is said to boast the most beautiful blue skies on earth, the food is delicious and cheap, the music is great, and the city is surely te most beautiful in world.
There is so much to see and do, you will feel like stretching your holiday. And the muggers? You're bound not to see any of them. I haven't.

I spent winter break in Rio just last year. My experiences would be quite a bit different than yours perhaps because I was surrounded by, and stayed with, Brasileiros the entire time; however, I really wouldn't be so concerned. You should just be cautious and use common sense. Try to learn as much Portuguese as possible though, it really helps out.

Above all, just have fun! Rio is an amazing place and just live life to the fullest!

If you want to visit rio, you just can't be exacty noticed. If you want to visit rio, try not using very colorful cloths and let your camera be seen. Don't go out of the hotel with a lot of money.
Rio ain't safe, I know that. I live in rio and I never had any problemas. The only thing is that normally turist come with lots of cash and cameras, ipods, etc appering. That is kind of an invitations for a robber.
My hint is, wear a packback and let everything inside.

Rio isn't the safest place on Earth but you can be cautious and still enjoy this wonderful city. There is hundreds of gringos there all the time so just be careful with where you go and with people you choose to trust. Here are some great tips for you:

Nope, despite the claims that it is as safe as any other cities, Rio is a real danger to tourists. Criminals can detect tourists a mile away and will just wait for the chance to get one, which won´t take long because tourists are not used to that level of criminality and will put themselves in an unsafe situation sooner or later.
So, be extra careful there.

I've been there & it was a beautiful city, indeed Cidade Maravilosa (spelling). As echoed elsewhere though you have to take the basic precautions, that is, don't overdress, don't wear expensive jewellery or have expensive cameras on show, don't be rude to the girls on the beaches (purely as that is not cool) & it is advisable to perhaps have a reliable guide who can speak Portuguese & English very well. I was lucky as I am married to a Brasilian so we didn't have to look for a good Portuguese speaking guide.

I've been to Rio numerous times and have not had any problems....It's just another big town that has the same fun and dangers as (let's say), chicago, new york....you have to be aware of this when you visit any place..If you go, be sure to go to sugarloaf mountain and the statue....it's awesome...good luck
