The Stig is a racing driver on the revised format of the BBC motoring show Top Gear. He is cast as a mysterious "tame racing driver" whose identity is unknown, and who never speaks on camera. Nonetheless he is fully credited as a presenter along with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

His primary function on the show is to drive various cars during segments of the programme, most often around the Top Gear test circuit, setting times which are then recorded on the Power Lap board. His second duty is to train whoever is the show's Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car that week.

The Stig's name derives from presenter Jeremy Clarkson's schooldays at Repton School.[1] He was originally going to be called "The Gimp"

His identity is being kept secret by the BBC programme, but I suspect that he might be a Swedish or Finnish professional rally driver.

Have seen "him" given a credit under the name Anni-Frid Stig, but suspect that was a deception.

Keep guessing?

Stig of the Dump is a children's novel by Clive King written in 1963. It is an eternal favourite with children and parents alike and was adapted for television, firstly by Thames Television for ITV in 1981 and later by the BBC in 2002.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Stig of the Dump (1963). 1971 Puffin paperback edition. 157 pagesStig is a caveman who lives at the bottom of the old quarry close to Barney's grandmother's house. Since the quarry is no longer in use, people throw all their rubbish away down there.

Barney finds Stig by falling through the roof of Stig's den. Barney and Stig become friends, even though they cannot talk to each other. Stig and Barney have a series of adventures together, including catching burglars breaking into Barney's grandmother's house. One night Barney and his sister Lou cannot sleep and get transported back to Stig's time where they spend a night helping his tribe complete a stone circle.

Stig means "path" in Swedish; the name indicates that a person is a pathfinder.
