Yes!! if you decide to come and live in our country then you should be REQUIRED to learn our language!

I bet that if any of us go to France or somewhere then we will probably have to learn THEIR language to survive!!! they're NOT going to pacify to us just because we can't speak French, German, etc.!!!! so why should we try to pacify to them just because they don't know how to speak English????

sorry, but that's my opinion!!

P.S. my mother is an immigrant from Italy. she came to the U.S when she was four years old. in the public school system, she was taught to speak english. then, my mom helped my grandparents learn the English language!! my mother still speaks Italian to our family and friends though!! so, I DON'T believe that they should drop their language altogethter!! they just need to learn it to be able to make a living!

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

Force to no, however they should be encouraged to learn English. We need to have something that bonds us together. The one voice of the masses should be understood by the masses. If no group can understand the others. Then there will never be equality in the country.

They should certainly be encouraged so to do.
You only get the best out of a culture that you can communicate with.
But remember, most of us are descended from 'foreigners' which is what gives us the best language on Earth.

They shouldn't be forced. If they can get by and be functioning citizens without learning English, then fine. BUT they should not expect for us to learn their language.

Yes, they should learn enough to be able to get decent jobs and to know when they are being cheated. Also having a common language is a way of unifying a country.

well yes as it would be benifical for them

on the same note - when americans travel - they should make an effort to learn a few words of their chosen destination. i find that americans demand to speak english and won't make the effort. so it's basically the same principal
[and i don;t mean the full language, but at least 'please' 'thank you' etc]

I don't think they should be in our country. But if they are, YES, they should learn the language.

No, or else it wouldn't be America any more. What makes this country so great is people can do whatever they want really. It would be nice if they would but forcing them no.
