well i have a series 2 tivo that i bought last year.you have to pay a service fee to tivo for the daily updates to the program guide.the tivo dials their 800 number over a built in modem or you can set it up to use your computer and it gets it's info via a broadband connection.i can use that guide to set up and record TV shows, etc.many cable companies have their own DVR's as well and that might be cheaper in the long run.

YOu know how on the computer, you can listen to music and hit pause, go back or go forward?

Tivos are kind of the same way. All TV comes live, so what Tivo does is record the transmission a few minutes behind you. When you want to go back, it keeps recording the live signal, hence the ability to fast forward until you "catch up" with the live signal.

The Tivo records to a harddrive, just like your music does. Thats pretty much it.

Oh, most TV is still transmitted through analog signals, so in order to make the programming recordable onto the Tivo unit, it has to make it a digital signal. But that all happens behind the scenes anyway.

its like a high tech VCR. its records digital cable while you watch it. then if you want to rewind or pause live show you can because it continue to record after you pause. The bigger the Harddrive the more you can record. However you have to pay a monthly fee about $20 and month, you can get a free Tivo player with 80 hours of record time. Anything more you have to buy it. It goes up to 300 hours.
