Percentage is the ratio of something to the total. Say the total is 37 and the number you have is 12. Then 12/37 x 100% would be the percentage that 12 is to the total 37 or 32.43%.

Another example:

23 students in a class. 8 boys & 15 girls.
%boys = 8/23 x 100% = 34.78%
%girls = 15/23 x 100% = 65.22%

Depends on what the number is. If it is the amount of what you are looking for, divide that number by the total sum. Multiply this number by 100 to get a percent.
