Need advice on this as I do not understand the difference between the two and don't want to get into the position of buying the xbox and then the PS3 is much better.

The PS3 isn't out yet in the UK or Ireland, which is where the question originates from. It'll be out March at the very earliest.
Both the X-Box 360 and the PS3 are great machines with a good long term future. The PS3 has slightly more prestige and bigger support from Japanese developers; the X-Box 360 has excellent support from the West and a very good online gaming system.
Thing is, if its for your son and you buy him a 360, will he then stilll want a PS3 come this time next year? Children always want the latest and greatest, and unless you don't mind shelling out for both machines I would wait until both are readily available and then put it to him 'its one or the other'.
In the meantime, Nintendo's DS Lite is a great handheld system and might tide him over.

The PS3 is not much better- in fact it's arguable if it's ANY better.
The Wii is unique (and the least expensive)
If your son is currently a Playstation fanatic who owns lots of PS1/PS2 games and really prefers those titles over other systems, then you may wish to go with the PS3, and just accept that it will be some months while they fix bugs and get it up to speed.
But if not, I'd get a 360. Check the article linked below.

First of all, the PS3 is out right now...you just can't find it cause sony backed off on the number on consoles they could ship.
In my personal opinion, the XBOX 360 is a better deal for most people for the money. Especially if they aren't interested in a Blu-Ray player(which I doubt your son needs). The XBOX 360 is also a good deal cheaper which should help you if you decide to get your son one.

Wait well into december,as they are going to do a good deal,with the xbox 360,i also hear that there is problems with the ps3.good luck

whan u buy xobow 360 or ps3 make sure u have a killer tv if u have an old tv the xbox 360 or ps3 wont work best one is a ponosonic plasma 60 tv

Xbox 360
The only good game that is exclusive to the PS3 is Metal Gear Solid
Whereas the xbox 360 is cheaper and has many exclusive games

PS3's on ebay are about 1k cause allt he fanatics got theirs.
Xbox 360 is cheap, but from people i know...ps3 blows the xbox out of the water in graphics and everything. I'd say if you can get it, go for the PS3

buy the playstation 3 because they said that the grapics are ten times better then the xbox 360 and i have a ps3 of my own so buy your son the ps3 it came out november 17,2006
