Rock music will never never ever be classical. A very tiny amount will survive their generations but not much.

I agree, there likely would be rock music. One reason it didn't appear on the original series (I bet) was that they would have had to pay for it. I guess they could have had some original, but since rock music tends to me more well known as a recorded medium (i.e., CDs) it would have to be paid for. After all, why shouldn't Data mix in a little of the Beatles while listening to Don Giovanni, the Brandenburg Concertos, etc. (remember the scene?).

Using pre-recorded music as such causes all sorts of nightmares when shows go into re-runs and to DVD (the reason why WKRP in Cincinnati has never came out on DVD despite quite a few requests for it) because of royalties and such.

In short, I don't think it's an oversight of the writers, just an insurmountable problem in the Hollywood legal department.

There was an episode of the original Star Trek called "The Way to Eden", with "space hippies", who played "futuristic rock music", with Spock playing his Vulcan lute.

Could be that Gene Roddenberry was producing his interpretation of the future and maybe figured rock music would have been out of place by the 23rd century.

They think they are too "evolved" for such primal music. The Classical and jazz they play is from a "primitive" time but is considered "refined"

Hmmmmmm...Didn't Zephren Cockran play rock on a dilapidated jukebox in one of the "next generation" movies???

I would bet rock would still be there....it's just harder to find...(Kind of like trying to find Bach on MTV or VH1 today)

The question should be "Why IS there no rock music" not why ARE, it is not gramatically correct.
