The more money you pay the better. $50-$100 is too low for a decent mp3 player. I suggest raising your budget to atleast $150.

Yes, absolutely.
In fact, many of the competitor units have more features. You're paying for the name "iPod", and you're also paying to be stuck into the iTunes service.
With a non-Apple and non-Zune unit, you have more freedom.
Your kids can use the Samsung and Sansa and Zen units as jump drives, so that they can take their word documents and school work along with them on the mp3 player, and hook into the school's computers with the usb cable to work on their projects. (If they are so inclined, of course). You can't get that with an iPod.
They can also share music with their friends - iPod doesn't do that either - it assigns an Ipod per computer, where as other units will be recognized by computers as a little external hard-drive - easier to use.
Many of the other non-iPod units also have an FM tuner, which if available, is an additional cost with an iPod.
Figure 512mb will hold about 200 songs. 1GB will hold 500 songs. It depends on how the mp3 is ripped (better quality means higher file size = less songs you can store), but the above figures are more or less the rule of thumb.
I personally use a small Samsung when I travel, and I couldn't be more pleased. In fact, because it's NOT an iPod, I start getting questions about it, which gives me a little bit of bragging rights.
Good luck this Christmas. :)

If you're looking for a great mp3 player, try extending your budget to $150.
A chep and effective mp3 player for Zen is the Creative Zen V Plus, which includes lots of features like music/video/photo storage and viewing, FM tuner, and voice recorder. I'm sure if you tried buying it on the internet, you'd get a cheap price.
Creative Zen V or the Creative Zen V Plus is definitely the way to go!

Ebay.com. You just might find new mp3 players for less that are brand named! Try them out over there before you buy.

here is one that is kid-tough! and (after the rebate) less than $30! http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2430465&CatId=2475 I have one of these too that I use on my motorcycle, great sound and it holds a gig of music!
here is the same thing but with 2GIG's of storage. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2430466&CatId=0
My favorite part about these is the fact that you do not need to put in any software....just plug it into the usb pot and drag your music in!
*TIP*
Convert your music to WMA format and get almost twice the music on your mp3 player. (these two play WMA's)
