anything to the 0th power is 1. what is happening on your calculator is that you didn't put -1 in parentheses. you should type it in like (-1)^0 instead of -1^0. When you type it the way you did, you are raising 1 to the 0th power and then multiplying by -1, which gives an answer of -1 instead of 1.

Make sure you are applying power 0 to -1, not to 1. Best way to do this is to enter 1, then press the change sign button, then do the power. If your calculator is genuinely in error, file a report with the manufacturer.

Anything raised to the 0 power is 1. Sounds like a glitch in your calculator--that's just the sort of off-the-wall problem that can make them act up.

Any number, other than zero, when raised to the zero power equals 1.
Zero raised to any power equals zero.
Just as an aside, zero is not positive or negative, BUT
zero is an even number! Why? The definition of an even number is any integer that can be divided evenly by 2. Zero divided by 2 equals zero! (Good SAT info!)
p,s, One cannot divide by zero - it's undefined. Example: a vertical slope is undefined because there is no change in the 'x' value, so in the slope formula one would have to be dividing by zero - can't do that! That's why a vertical slope is undefined!

Try entering (-1)^0 in your calculator and not -1^0. The calculator is doing (-1)*(1^0) because of the order of operations.

You probably actually calculated
-(1^0) rather than (-1)^0
Try it again with the ( )
I just tried it with my TI-83 and got the -1 the first way and 1 the second (correct) way.
