I am 14 and I am thinking of volunteering in a hospital (accepting ages 14-18). What kind of jobs will I get to do? I am thinking of being a doctor, so will this help me at all?

Because of my age, when I volunteered I was only allowed to distribute water to clients or feed them, but each hospital will have different regulations. It did not make any difference to them that I had a first aid & CPR certificate. You will have to call their volunteer coordinator to find out.

You will need to have your parent or guardian sign your permission form in order to volunteer.

Thinking of being a doctor? By volunteering, this will get you in "on the ground floor" of the medical world as a whole. You'll have to ask the hospital regarding what they'll allow--each place is different.

I'm 14, too! I totally think that volunteering in a hospital will help you personally and will help you become a doctor. This way you can see what they expect in doctors, and learn from them.

What a wonderful and rewarding thing to do! You will do many different things. As a volunteer you will feel good about yourself when asked to help, even if its just a small task. But most important you will see many people with different kinds of medical problems. You learn by watching nurses and Cna's do different procedure's for the patients. You will learn so much just from watching and listening. I was a volunteer years ago. I use to do things like get ice, water, news papers, even be asked to please get their nurse for them. You might be asked something so simple like can you please get me an extra pillow. You begin to understand the needs theses people have. You will look foward to learn more just by watching and keeping your ears opened. Eventually if you like this job, you will look foward to volunteering your time, and you will see that people will look foward to seeing you each day. Its a good feeling when you feel needed. Good Luck!

I knew a girl when I was in school who wanted to be a doctor and was in a program she said was called "Candy Stripers," which was a volunteer program. I think the main duties were cheering people up and delivering simple things like beverages. I don't know if she ever became a doctor.
