Yes. If you don't, it will drop its needles in a hurry.
You can also get additives for the water that will make the tree hang onto its needles longer. A crushed Vitamin C tablet (chewable) is a good one.
AND, if the tree has NOT been in water (most likely), the capillaries at the base of the stem will have closed and prevent the tree from drawing the water up into its branches.
You should cut a small piece off the bottom of the stem (about 2 inches) to expose open capillaries.

A real tree has to be put in a holder that has adaquate room for water. The water supply has to be tpped up every other day with out fail. The tree will dry out very quickly without it, the needles will drop off & make an awful mess. Worse a dried out tree quickly becomes a serious fire hazzard.Merry Christmas.

yes... remember, just because it's cut off from the roots, doesn't mean it's dead. you still have to water it because it can dry out and be dead, but don't drown it either. ask the people you bought the tree from on tips to keep it up. and if you have a house, you can plant the tree in your yard instead of wasting the money and tossing it out.

Yes, you must keep the cut trunk submerged in water. If you buy it precut it is best to cut and inch or so off the trunk to open up the vascular system. It won't hurt to throw a couple asprin in the water too. Don't ask me why, but it works. I guess it's the vascular system!

yes, it is a live tree and will die without water. you also have to add more water to it every few days as the tree absorbs the water to stay alive.
