driving a car on the road without road tax is illegal full stop and depending on what area you live in your car can be confiscated and crushed

You can't, it's totally illegal and can cost you a great deal of money! The car has no road tax when the current tax expires. (if you're not sure, look at the expiry date on the disc!).
You can re-tax up to 14 days before the old tax expires but at midnight on the date of expiry you don't have any tax so forget all the folklore about having 14 days in which to re-tax.
As somebody else mentioned, the ONLY time you can drive an un-taxed (and/or MOT-expired) car on the road is when going to and from a pre-booked MOT test by the most direct route available. (And that cuts out going to the supermarket on the way, even if it's at the side of the road you're using, because you'd have to leave the direct route to go into the car park!)
Even if your car is old-enough to be exempt from having to pay road tax you still have to have a current tax disc displayed, (even though the duty will be shown as "nil") and the same renewal rules apply.
Isn't owning a car fun? We have the highest duty rates on road tax and fuel of just about any other country in the world .... and there's only one way the cost is likely to keep going!!!

Just like to mention, the 14 days "grace" period is and always was a myth. It just came about because often the DVLA (or whatever they were called) usually didn't bother to prosecute for this length of time, they just allowed you to pay up. They always could prosecute, just didn't bother...

You must have a valid tax disc while the car's on the road, including parked. The only exception is while you're on the way to a pre-booked MOT, and you'd have to prove that.

In short, tax it or (these days) risk being done and having it crushed!

Tax Disc Fines in the Post

Thousands of drivers who failed to renew their tax discs will be receiving an unwelcome surprise in the post - an £80 penalty - under a new enforcement scheme. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) says 97,000 penalties are being issued to UK motorists whose discs expired at the end of December.

Until now an untaxed vehicle only led to a fine if it was spotted on the road, for example by a police officer. Ex-owners who fail to notify the DVLA of a sale can also now be fined. Owners who have sent their cars to be scrapped or store them off a public road without informing the DVLA will be similarly targeted. Vehicles without a valid tax disc will also stand a greater risk of being clamped under the new rules.

The new rules are designed to prevent the huge number of untaxed vehicles which are on the road.

Once your road tax runs out it is illegal to drive your car. In days gone by they used to give you I think up to two weeks grace to get your tax disc replaced. But since MOT's are recorded online you can now get your car tax by telephone if you have a credit/debit card. There are no excuses now.

Not one hour! Once the tax has run out, you cannot drive it at all. If you do you and you are `caught` you will be fined and have to pay at least four months road tax.

Technically you cannot. But the police may be able to issue you with a pardon if you have bought the disc over the internet and it hasn't arrived yet or if you can show you have ordered one but the payment doesn't come out til the 12th. This pardon certificate would run out after 14days from the first irrespective though.

You can't drive a vehicle on a public road without a valid road tax disc being displayed in the windscreen.

Driving without valid tax is illegal.

Maximum penalty is £1000 fine plus paying the back tax, the car can also be confiscated and crushed.
