The Christmas Star that is supposed to have led the Three Wise Men to the stable in Bethlehem.

The star upon the Christmas Tree represents the star above the manger that led the Three Wise Men to Jesus' birth.

It goes on the very top above everything else because the star was above them at the top of the sky. It's also at the top because the higher anything is the higher it's closer to Heaven.

Putting the star upon the tree is a special thing that you are ALWAYS supposed to have. However, some families use an angel.

The angel represent the angels in Heaven, that were watching over everyone in the manger. Or, it represents the angel that was flying high above the manger with a banner saying, 'Noel'. It was a sign of joy coming down from Heaven because of the presence of Jesus' birth. It too is a big thing for Christmas.

I would imagine it's a direct representation of the star of the east that the wise men used as a guide to lead them to the Messiah in the Nativity story.

The angel, I think, is a representation of the angels that sang from Heaven when Christ was born.
