I'm 38 weeks along with my second child. At my last doctor's appointment, I was 2 cm. dilated and 50% effaced. since then, I've started losing my mucus plug. About 5 hours ago I woke up in a lot of pain and about 2 hours later, contractions started they would be about 5 minutes apart. Then they just stopped about 45 minutes ago, for about 15 minutes and now they have started again and are 4-5 minutes apart and last about 60 seconds and seem to be getting stronger each time. Is this the real deal? I've been having a lot of braxton hicks contractions the last 2 weeks that have fooled me, b ut these feel a lot worse than any of the others have. I tried a warm bath and they still came, and usually when I lay down, they go away, but they're not this time.

If it is real labor, can anyone explain the 15 minute break without contractions?

It sounds like it might be the real deal. If your contractions are 4-5 minutes apart for one hour, or if your water breaks, or if you have vaginal bleeding call your md before making the trip to the hospital. your cervix needs regular contractions to change it's size. The mucous plug loss is a sign that your cervix may be changing, but not a true sign of "active labor" which is what you go to the hospital for. However, if you are having a hard time talking, you have to pause for your contraction and it really makes your toes curl (smile), you may beginning active labor. Good luck with your labor experience.

It does sound like the real thing. It could happen that it stops for a while again. If they are 1 to 2 minutes apart and last longer then a minute then the real deal has started. But you can always call your doctor or midwife, especially if you feel you should or when you feel it's time.

It doesnt sound like labour. But it could be. : ) You never know unless you get checked out. Normally...contractions when you are in labour dont start and stop. They continue and pick up in force. Time them. Stop doing anything. Lay down on your left side and then forget what has been going on previously. If they are regular (3,3,3,7,3,3,3,7 or 3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3) and strong call your OBGYNE. What was your first pregnancy like? They say your first and second are nothing alike. : ) So judge off that also.
Good luck and call your dr and see what they have to say. I'm not a dr by any means...just a mommy who'se been there and done that

Real contractions only last about 40-60 seconds and goes on and off within 5-7 minutes interval. You should call a doctor about your situation.

Could be, but we're not doctors :(
Go to the hospital, it never hurts to have them take a look at the monitor and see what's going on. I went at least a dozen times with my first because I just KNEW I was in labor.....I was wrong. Come to find out the time I was in labor I thought it was false and from the time I got through the ER doors until she was delivered it was 3 minutes and 6 pushes and out came a healthy 7lb 12oz little girl So, don't take the chance of not making it. Good luck!

Sounds to me like the real deal. The same thing happened to me my contractions were not consistant. I kept going to the hospital only to get sent home. They were painful and I got ZERO sleep 3 days before I delivered! If you live close to the hospital than go in. Or if you think you can wait with the pain any longer just wait it out till al ittle later on. They may start comming more frequently and even more stronger than you will know its the real deal!

You lost your mucous plug so yeah your going into labor. It doesnt mean that your baby is going to be deliver today or tomorrow, but i had my baby an hour after my mucous plug came out so i would call your doctor and tell him.

I would say yes, they seem to be progressive.
I'd call your OB and see if she wants you to head in yet, or wait for your water to break or for more predictable contractions (ones that stay more than an hour and get closer together).
