If you are sensitive to mascara, avoid the ones with petrochemicals and methylparabens. I've heard the bat poop rumor...but not sue if it's true. Seems unlikely, but most cheap cosmetics do use animal fats and other derivatives.
I started being concerned a few months ago when a friend introduced me to Arbonne products. They are 100% Vegan approved (no animal products, or byproducts , no animal testing)
You should be concerned about what you use. I never really thought about it until I started looking up the ingredients to my makeup. Lotsa chemicals, fillers, metals and garbage. Your skin is like a sponge..it soaks stuff in. Like the aluminum in your deodorant/antiperspirant. Thats why companies use transdermal patches for birth control, smoking cessastion, etc... you soak it up!
I've switched to arbonne make up only.... and their skin care line...they also have wonderful bath and body sets. I just ordered the mandarin cashmere holiday set today!
You can order online at http://www.arbonne.com. You'll need to enter a consultant ID, mine is16459642.
If you want info on how to order wholesale (35% off) just e=mail me!

"...animal hair and certain cosmetics, such as mascara, face creams, and eyebrow pencil, can cause allergies that affect the eye. Touching or rubbing eyes after handling nail polish, soaps, or chemicals may cause an allergic reaction. Some people have sensitivity to lip gloss and eye makeup. Allergy symptoms are temporary and can eliminated by not having contact with the offending cosmetic or detergent."

"Mascara is easily contaminated by bacteria, which you definitely don't want in your eyes... Discard mascara after four months, max."

Don,t lend or borrow mascara as it can pass on eye infections & ideally you should throw out your mascara after 6-12 months

Don't eat it, nothing healthy in it at all!

But seriously, overuse can cause eye lash breakage. Most mascaras have a life of six months, I've used them longer than that, but if you won't to be safe that's it. (It's because of bacteria).
Never pump the wand in and out, it lets air in and this can cause bacteria too.
