No. But if you were to loose the mains power you would loose any work you hadn't saved. the battery makes your laptop portable and acts like UPS in a desktop.

No but...infact it might be dangerous if you are using a laptop with Sony batteries :D

no it is not actually it is better to take the battery out if you are going to have it plugged in, just remember it will turn off if you unplug it and you might lose all your hard work.
