It sounds to me like you have a pay as you go type phone they can be very expensive to use as they as really for low users or people that get more incomming calls than make outgoing ones. Look at what you are spending for example £10 a month is fair for a PAYG user. If you are spending more than this go for a contract phone where you pay a set monthly amout they start from £10 and move up depending on what package you go for, to avoid confusion get a T-Mobile Flex tariff package it costs a standard rate and can use your credits for calls, text and pictures. To avoid a scary bill if you do go over your allowence have a bar addres this will stop the phone from making outbound calls after the allowence has been used . And you get a nice new free phone when you sign up. Overall you will get better value for money and not have to mess around with top ups just one monthly direct debit. You can also port your number accross to save any hassle, get down to the car phone warehouse or any T-Mobile shop to set it up.

Hello! I work in a phone shop, my advise would be work out a budget for the handset. How much do you want to spend on the handset its self? As for the network and tariff i would say try and get on the same network as your family and friends as calls to the same network are alot cheaper than x-network calling. If your family and friends are all on different networks, i would recommend t-mobile who do the every1 tariff, which is 12p to anyone. Or if you have family on vodafone that would benefit you and your friends, as voda have just released "vodafone family" A group of 4 people on voda register as a family and pay a little extra, as a result you 4 people get free calls to each other anytime! Orange also do something similar, its worth popping in to you local phone shop, they can go through you needs and find the right package that will suit you needs.

They are all expensive unless you use them a lot and have a contract.
The UK government made 21bilion pounds from selling licences to the operators a few years ago and they have to charge you somehow to get it back. Someone also has to pay for the "free" phones.
