Christoper Columbus (ie Cristofero Colombo) never set foot on any of the 50 states of the US. He did visit Puerto Rico.
He first set foot on what is now called the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas, on Oct 12, 1492. He visited Hispaniola (the part now known as the Dominican Republic) and other smaller islands on his first visits. On his later three visits, he set foot on Central America, Haiti, South America, Cuba, Trinidad and many other islands. But no part of Columbus ever set foot on any part of the 50 states.
Why we call or capital the District of Columbia I haven't found a really logical reason for. My suspicion is that Americans secretly believe that somehow Columbus discoverd America for their benefit. Which he did. But not intentionally.
He was working for Spain when he discovered America, and they weren't always really happy with the job as he did it.
But he is honored by the Spanish, nonetheless. Thje Spanish, the Cubans and the Dominicans all claim they have his bones, and they respect the H*ll outta them these days.
"America" is not just the USA: it is all the real estate between Baffin Island in Canada to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina: North and South America and Central America and all those islands as well.
The USA is not even the biggest country in America in area, although it is the one with the most people at the moment.

Columbus didn't make it to the US. He landed in Hispaniola. Discovered the Americas as a whole, not just North America.

I think it was Hispanola. Part of it is Haiti, the rest is the Domincan Republic. Neither are U.S. states. I think the only land he touched that is part of the United States is Puerto Rico, which is a territory, and may one day become a state.
