How do you think they refer to each other, "Gnome man who is wearing a red-and-green striped sweater and orange socks, has short black hair, and yesterday was wearing fuschia plastic shoes, watch out! Someone's about to shoot you you!"
Umm yeah. The person with the gun would probably have killed him by the word "red." If there is a language, there are names. At least if you're not talking about lawn gnomes, and there are several gnomes who interact.

Gnomes are usually known by titles or other nicknames. Their real names are reserved for their kin and close friends. Gnomes enjoy trickery and mistief and usually earn their nicknames from feats of beguilment, so their nicknames are often assosiated with these feats such as belchwalloper and boondangle. When traveling, they are known by a kin name such as watty of the wattykins or the travelocity gnome, this way their kin's reputation travels with them.
