on lots of books and movies they imply that the CIA sucks but i am curious as to how good or bad the CIA is at its job.

Not sure if it has improved in the past couple years, but its intelligence gathering via human spying was pretty bad following the Cold War. Thanks to some rogue officers and actions, the CIA became more and more conservative and worried more about its image and getting "caught" doing something questionable than getting good intelligence. As a consequence, it relied more and more on satillites and technology.
Sadly, countries like Iran have better spy networks than what we have. Hopefully the CIA has been able to reform itself since 9/11, but last I heard, that was not the case.

i think that they do do a good job, but to keep everyone from questioning the government they can't say what they want.
i saw on the news there was an ex CIA official and he finally came to talk to the media about the "weapons of mass destruction". he said he repeatably told his superiors that the information they were giving to the public wasn't correct.
i'd like to work for the CIA or FBI someday, so i hope something like this doesn't continue.

This is a very good question, and one that I have thought of myself in the last couple of days. From reading that I have done on the CIA my feeling is that they absolutely suck. And this isn't something that has just tarted either it goes back to the Eisenhower administration.

They couldnt stop 9/11
They have no clue about anything related to Osama.
Iraq had WMD.
Saddam could attack US in 45 minutes or so.
A country is now ruined and 100s of people die everyday.
Do you need more evidence...
