When I shut down my computer it sometimes re-starts on its own(and yes i do press shut-down and not re-start). What is causing this? I don't think it is due to a virus because my anti-virus software hasn't detected anything, and my computer runs fine in all other ways without any problems. It doesn't happen all the time either; just sometimes.

I have had my anti-virus software for about a year and half. Do you think I should get a new one then? If so what anti virus software do people recommend that is easy to use. I currently have Kapersky and that was a pain in the a**e to begin with as I found it difficult to use!

Operator malfucntion.
Actually, "moose" is right. Anti virus softwares can only detect the types of viruses the software has been programed to find. Virus writers are constantly writing new ones to get around the detector's algorythims.
That's why we have to keep updating our anti virus software. And, as soon as the latest and greates AV software comes out, some hacker is working on how to get through.

I have another possible solution, I ran into this a couple of years ago. Spent a whole day checking the wiring and everything.
Go into Start, Control Panel.
Then go first into Keyboard menu.
Go to Hardware, then Properties.
If somewhere in there there is an option to let that device control startup/de-hibernation/de-standby, turn it off.
Repeat with Mouse in Control Panel
This might work, for me it was the problem that any use of my mouse would start my computer :) Might as well install and run Spybot Search and Destroy while you're at it.

It sounds like you set the computer to shutdown after a period of inactivity. Right click any empty space on the desktop > Properties > click the "Screen Saver" tab > click [Power] > for "Turn off hard disk," choose Never. However, you can also choose to go in to either Standby or Hibernate mode after a period of inactivity. This is probably a better choice than shutting down the hard drive. Using the Standby mode, after a period of inactivity, the computer shutdowns most processes but there is a trickle of electricity keeping the CPU and motherboard alive. In Hibernate mode, the computer saves ever active process in to memory and then shuts down everything on the computer. In this mode, when you turn on the computer, the computer is exactly like you left it. As a general rule, Standby mode is recommended for desktop computers. Hibernate mode is recommended for laptops.

Its either your power supply or a setting in your bios that restarts after power failure which sometimes get the wrong message when you shutdown.
to enter your bios press either delete, F1,F2,F10,or F12
while booting your computer up.
easiest way is to press them all at the same time. and multiple times.
to test your power supply you need to take it to a shop or buy a tester yourself. they cost about $15 and can be found on newegg.com

It could be a virus or a bug like the others said but it can also be that the ON button switch is getting sticky.
