I'm writing a novel and my main character is going to be named Francine. She's like this elf-human-fairy worrier, but doesn't find that out untill she's older, so I can't pick out a name like Xena or Shantaletia or some really weird fairy name. Is this name to common? To weird? Ugly sounding? I really like this name, but tell me your thoughts. Her full name will be Francine Autumist Maxwell.

The most important part of the name of your main character is that you like it. You're the one who will be using it during the next 2-300 pages. The second? That it fits your plot, which you've already worried about.
I think you're doing a great job naming her, but what about her character? elf-human-fairy-warrior?! (I know you didn't mean it this literally but still..) People want flaws in characters! People in fiction have to make sense. Make sure shes not the perfect, strongest, strangest, or most mixed character ever. What makes them memorable, lovable, what gives other people the power to empathize with your character is what we share. Humanize your character.
And make sure your plot is original. You can have the best character in the world, but if your plot isn't driven, well executed and original, no one wants to read it, and you have no real story to tell. And as you know, no story=no book.

I love fantasy and personally think that the name Francine is too modern for an elf-human-fairy warrior. It's a nice name, but I don't think it'll strike a good chord if you're writing fantasy. And I know that some people will bring up Harry Potter as an example of modern name in fantasy, but your story sounds like it's set back in the times of knights in shining armor. Just my thoughts. Hope it helps.

Francine is a good and ironic name. With a name like that, I'd really think she was a worrier, and not a WARRIOR. And with a name like Francine autumist Maxwell, you'd REALLY think of a stiff, upper class f*ck that gets on everybody's nerves because she throws her money around like it was just paper.

Personally, I think Francine is a nice feminine name, not weird at all. I also met a wonderful and brilliant female writer named Francine Prose. Good luck with your book!

The name Francine was also used for a charater in the Gidget series; books, movies and TV. Gidget was Francine, her birth name and Gidget her nickname. I'd fine another name.

Makes me think of of candy Valley extreme. Francine Pascal created candy Valley extreme and all its spin-offs. so as that's what i think of of as quickly as I pay attention that call. On a scale of one million to ten, i could say approximately 4 or so.
