The only things I can think of is repeated cleaning with a green scratch pad and bleachy water. After rinsing, try CLR or some really potent cleanser. Even Soft Scrub would probably work. Try asking at your local hardware store, they know all about the products you'd need. I'm sure they've heard it all before. Good luck!

I had the same problem with a rental and I used Dawn dishwashing soap and very hot water. I actually boiled a pot of water to add to the tub water and it broke up the dirt really quickly. Make sure you don't stick your hands in the not water mixture (I used a brand new toilet brush) Good luck!

Scrubfree followed up with a good rinse and then baking soda does a great job. It it's really bad, just repeat it. The scrubfree loosens up most of the grime and what doesn't get rinsed off, the baking soda will get.
DH lives in his workshop and he trashes out the tub pretty good. Solvents, grease, you name it, its been in the tub. My cleaning routine gets things sqeaky clean again with minimal time and effort.

If you cant clean it with a green scratch pad, rubber gloves, and a bottle of comet, you are probably not going to get it clean.
Make sure you get a no abrasive comet, (or other brand of bleach like cleaner) and NEVER ever mix any kind of cleaners. DON'T even use anything else the same day as you use another one, in the same room.
They let off toxic fumes when mixed even in the drain!!!

I saw this on How Clean is Your House starring Kim and Aggie (love!). Use salt and lemon juice or a lemon wedge. Really cleans up nice. When you're done scouring a bit of Clorox Cleanup will finish the job.

Superhot water, comet with bleach, and a rough scrubby brush. And lots of pressure. You may have to do it more than once.
