Mix up a batch of salt dough clay....1 cup water,2 cups salt,2 cups flour. Mix well and knead for about 10 minutes to be sure salt is dissolved. Now sculpt a bone shape from crumbled aluminum foil....be sure to use enough to make it very compacted. Roll out the salt dough with a rolling pin between 2 sheets of waxed paper to about a 1/4" thickness then use this sheet to cover the surface of your foil bone armature. Once all covered, smooth out any seams. Take a tool with a sharp point and make tiny pin prick holes randomly all over the bone since bones don't usually look perfectly smooth or unblemished. Bake the bone in a 250 degree oven for about 15-30 minutes. The longer it bakes the more golden looking the color will become. After it has cooled, if it is too white, rub a little brown paint or even shoe polish on and wipe off immediately. The color will stay in any cracks that have formed and in the tiny holes...this will help it look more aged and realistic.

I have to agree and say paper mache. I think you could probably make i look real enough if you made sure the strips were very smooth. Also if you have any long balloons (used to make balloon animals) use them as a base. Then paint them white. Good luck!
If you need bones to trace for shape go to:

(under sources are some good site with paper mache recipes)

From what I remember of that one, the bones were not fake. They were from a mixture of human and ape and had been ground down to fit with each other. They were then chemically aged. Yep, the scientists were duped and stayed duped for years. There were some who questioned it though but I think it took 40 years before the proper testing happened to point out that they were fakes. There are ideas on who did it but I think it was done more for professional gain rather than religious. Either that or it was done to play a joke on someone and it got out of hand.

I heard of using paper mache over balloons of different sizes also
clay works well just mold it the size of bone you need and paint it.

make a paper mache bone then mix flower and glue to cover the model. after it dries use somthing rough like sand paper to smooth it out. if you do it right it will look real enough.
