Contrary to what others have said here, the difference is not in the color or the height. If you search the internet for cannabis seeds you will find that there are literally hundreds of varieties of high-grade marijuana available. They include short plants, tall plants, and medium plants. The colors are nearly all the colors of the rainbow, ranging from gold or light green to dark purples or some that are almost black. Some have so much resin on them that they look like they have been frosted with sugar.
The primary difference is the level of THC in the product, though there are other related compounds in the plant that may have various different effects on the "high". When it is used medically, the users often state that particular varieties work better for particular conditions, based on the content of these various chemicals. For example, some varieties are recommended for pain, while others may be recommended for things like multiple sclerosis. There hasn't been a lot of research allowed on all these different claims of effects on particular illnesses so, at this point, whether one variety is better than another for a particular illness is just an educated guess.
As you might expect, in general, higher quality marijuana tends to cost more than the lower quality stuff.
See http://druglibrary.org/schaffer for a wealth of related information on the subject of marijuana.

K.. lets see.... I'm going to start out with the fact that most schwagg or mex was grown in big, outdoor feilds in remote parts of the us, mexico, or canada. It has seeds because if you have a big farm, you can't weed out all of the male plants which pollinate the females. You don't want seeds in your bud because they are about .015% thc. Good, Clean, potent bud is usually between 20-30 and is the best strains up to 35%. The three things that degrade thc the most are light, heat, and oxygen. Old weed is a lot of the time a more tripped out high, because as the thc begins to degrade, levels of other active ingredients in cannabis rise as a bi-product.
The worst of schwagg has either been dried in the oven, dried in a big heavy book, smuggled in compated-rock-hard bricks in gas tanks or a combination of the three.
Chronic, on the other hand is grown in a small outdoor garden, usually small enough to get rid of the pollinators, or an indoor garden. A lot of schwagg had the potentil to be good bud but was incorrectly harvested, dried, cured, stored, or spread. Chronic has no seeds and is dried in careful ways to prevent damage to the thc chrystals and thc degradation.

One other thing Cliff left out is the quality of the cure. I don't mean cure an ailment, I referring to how the weed is processed after harvesting. Properly cured weed isn't just dried, first it is cured THEN dried. You can really tell if it has been cured or not by smelling it. It can look incredible but if it has that 'lawn clipping smell, it will rip your lungs up and make you cough like hell. Curing in generally keeps the weed moist and alive for a couple of days before drying. This allows the starches in the plant to change to sugars. Next time you smell you weed see if you pick out that smell I described...that's schwaaagggg.

The concentration of THC is a lot higher(no pun intended) in high grade than schwag. and High grade cost a helluva lot more per gram. High grade is usually grown by pros and not on commercial farms.

I think it is the strength of the herb. Or the THC levels. You also need to smoke less of the high grade to get high than of the lower grade stuff.
