(1) You dont have sex with the film - unless you got a really really strange fetish
(2) You normally dont get STDs from films
(3) You pay once and you own the film, but if you want a prostitute more than once, you have to pay more than once
(4) A prostitute is a live person
(5) You can talk to the prostitute and she will answer you (if you think the film is answering you, you are deluded)
(6) You can watch the film with the prostitute - but the prostitue probably wont let you film her
(7) You can go to jail for soliciting a prostitute - but buying a film is normally legal
(8) You can watch the film in the privacy of your home without anyone thinking anything suspicious

I cannot say there is a significant difference. Why then is one legal and the other not. I suppose it is a matter of potential for infection by sexually transmitted disease.
It is in the interest of producers to insure that all participants are disease free. After all someone may come back and sue him in the future if he/she didn't do all humanly possible to protect the actors/actresses.
Prostitution is open to many more variables, many more men, the prostitute "may" not have a good education and understand the importance of regular check ups and you can't sue the pimp .
Legalization and regulation would probably be an intelligent health change, as well as groups to help disadvantaged women get out of the lifestyle. Legalization isn't an option so long as some of the christian right see sex as dirty, and prostitutes as devil spawn.

Prostitutes get paid to have sex.
Porn actors get paid for letting the directors film them having sex.
For porn to be prostitution the actors would have to pay EACH OTHER!
Look at it that way -- say a married couple decides to accept payment of somebody to film them on their wedding night, would this make them prostitutes?

you have asked a very thought provoking question and I congratulate you for asking the question. I think if there is any difference then it's in the legal definition of these two activities. Using ones body sexually for gainful returns is prostitution in that sense pornographic movies are no different. Both are social evils and should be abolished.

Adult films are (usually) fake, and thus fiction, while prosititution is real life. Prostitution can spread disease and is often associated with violence (pimp on ho smackdown), theft (rolling the john), drug addiction, and various other kinds of criminal activities. If prostitution was legal, these things wouldn't happen so much.

Staring in adult films is legal if you are an adult, and prostitution is illegal everywhere in the US (except a couple of counties).
Is it hypocritical...somewhat.

I suppose if you're a Christian it's not, especially according to Jesus Christ. However, by the standing of the law; there is a huge difference.
Prostitution is the act of selling ones body by literally engaging in the act of sex, adult films are nothing of the sort.

Not terribly different. Personally, I think prostitution should be legal, regulated, and taxed as well!
