Please disregard the first answer. Babies do not usually start talking until they are a year old. But every baby is different and some learn faster or slower than others. Also if a baby was born prematurely or has had some health complications as a set back then they develop and grow at a different pace from the average child. Don't worry about this too much. The best way to encourage language and talking skills is by reading books to your baby, singing, and talking to her each day. Also sounding out different tones and saying the alphabet helps baby to be familiar with the beginning sounds of words. For example, say 'A is for Apple, B is for Baby, C is for Cat etc etc. I do this while changing my daughter's diaper and she seems to enjoy listening to me. I also sing counting songs and use my fingers and she loves that. While giving her a bath each night I sing the same song that I made up "taking a bath in the big bathtub, won't you like to wash and scrub?". So in each activity there is a pattern as well as she is learning new language skills.

Also counting in different languages will teach your baby multiple variations in communicating. I count to my daughter in english, urdu, german, and spanish. As well as I am also teaching her to understand urdu words.

The first words can often be heard somewhere between 10 months and 18 months....
Then again, it's also normal for a baby to say his/her first word at the age of two....

The baby will start to speak when it's ready. Just make shure to read alot, tell stories and sing... That will make the child speak earlyer...
