The trade deficit of US is around $200 billion. To your question, it can be philosophical, academic or practical. If it is philosophical then there are lot of complicated economic factors involoved. I will state few simple ones. American economy being numero uno was built up on trade, so encouraging trade to everyone at all costs is their policy. It helps in developing nations and prspering developed nations. So in that case it is good. It improves the employment rate, reduces poverty etc;. Going beyond this point is complicated.
Academically all trade deficits are bad. Consequnces are lowering exchange rates and reducing purchasing power of local economies that run high trade deficits.
Practically, America is not loosing much, since to which ever country it runs deficit, it directs them or allows them to invest in it's t-bills long term and short term and this helps Americans finance their budgets without much borrowing or it prevents 'crowding out' of local investments. Since America this way feeds the World Economy and in reciprocation others are willing to invest their new earned dollars back in America, it helps poor countries to prosper and let Amercia live in the bargain as a benifactor. So this is also good.

64 billion is the last i heard and thats a little more than I have in my banck acount. I'd say its huge. But keep in mind that the prior adminstration had balanced the buget so much to the point that there was actually a surplus. So considering we acually had millions of dollars in the bank to the good and when the ne adminstration took over they not only erased that surplus but now run a defict of 64 BILLION that becomes even larger. There's more. Consider that The bush administration has driven $648 TRILLION into the private sector.(businesses etc). So the rich get richer and how many trillion di you earn this year? Yeah, me too.

Sense our government has no intentions of paying it off, I say there must not be one.
