sounds like you are not pushing it in all of the way into the stereo jack. if its a really old computer it could have mono sound.
otherwise the wire for one side could have broken.

I would try to push it in harder, then if that doesn't work try soldering the loose contact that is if its not on the motherboard. if its an add on card what have you got to lose you replace it if you cant fix it, if you kill it the rest of the way.

looks to be broke, one of the soldered joints or some corrosion has built up on the contacts. the best way to know for sure is to check it with another set, if they both do it, then its 99% assumed to be broke.

If you are referring to a desktop, then you can put another card in it unless you feel skilled enough with a soldering gun., Laptop is the same, but they are layed out differently, and much harder to get to, but normally also in small self-contained componetry as well. Harder to find though, so practice with the soldering gun.

I would recommend taking it to a pro if you have not soldiered. I can do that, but I have been doing it since I was a small child.

PS..you can get new headphone jacks at radioshack or off of a donor board for somehting as long as it is a stereo jack you can make it work. ;)

hope this helps.

If your computer audio out is mono, your headphone works just one side, try to find a stereo adaptor (radio shack)
