Forty years after birth control pills for women came into widespread use, there is still n o birth control pill for men. One reason for this is the basic difference between female realease of an oocyte each month and the male production of sperm. IIs it easier to supress fertility in women than in men?

well ,let's face it. women release one fertilized egg per month or cycle. i guess this is so because we only need one chance per cycle to do it right. men, on the other hand, can't be trusted to do it right so instead of having 'some' sperm , nature saw the problem at hand (men) and had it so that they release thousands of sperm all eager & ready to butt heads with one another to get to the golden prize, THE EGG. even with all odds in favor, due to sheet number of sperm to egg, ratio is outstanding, the sperm boys still don't always get it right. so typical! in answer to your question, alas, it is simplier to administer birth control to women than men. men, as been proven, who can not be trusted to take out the garbage, can be trusted to take their birth control? get real!

Pharmacological intervention requires intervention with a well-understood REGULATED process, intervention upon is well-tolerated.

Historically, it has been easier to supress fertility in women because eggs are released monthly by ovulation which is a well-understood and process, which is exquisitely hormanally-regulated and is therefore amenable to therapeutic intervention.

On the flip side, a recent article on male contraception can be found at: http://humupd.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/12/4/463
(the full article will require going to your nearby biomedical library or buying online for probably $40)

It's much easier to supress it in women because there is little evidence of a traceable cycle in men. A cycle that can be traced can be supressed. Supression of fertility in women is much more feasible.
