There are literally dozens of things that can cause your check engine light to come on, and hundreds of combinations of things. You need someone with the proper computer interface diagnostic tools just to start looking. Only experienced techs can properly interpret what the types of tools read. It is a myth that you plug the tool in and it magically tells you what the problem is. Many of the things that cause the light to come on are mechanical, and the sensors are picking up false information due to that, and then tell the computer that there is one thing wrong when in fact there are 2 or 3. There are too many possibilities to go into here. If your car is modern you have sensors in the transmission as well. This sensor could send real or false information to the computer and it will in turn tell your car's engine to run differently, usually not for the better. Your best bet is to take it to someone who specializes in diagnostics on late model vehicles, even if your car is a little older. If they know new cars, they will know the older ones too.

The TPS input is used by the computer to determine gear selection. If your car was shifting erratically, and the computer stored a TPS code, your mechanic was going in the right direction, he just didn't go far enough. You very likely have a wiring problem.
The last step in a repair is to verify the repair. Your mechanic should have known that. Look for someone with more experience. You want your doctor to be qualified, your mechanic is a doctor for your car. Ask to see his certifications before you let him work on your car.

Be careful!! A "check engine light" is a repair shop's delight!

It could be a lot of things. Take it to a shop with proper diagnostic equipment, not just wrenches, and they should be able to fix it.
