Appreciate the nice memories you have of your hamster, then consider going out to pick up another one. One pet can't take the place of another, but believe me a new pet can sure cheer you up.

Oh, my sympathies. Just remember that Dusty lived a nice, long hamster life. Try to only remember him in his prime, and not the day he died. It sometimes also helps if you do get another pet, a hamster or a similar pet, because you'll have another pet to care for, and won't be able to look at Dusty's empty cage or wheel or play toys because you'll know your new hamster is adding sweet memories to the ones Dusty brought playing/sleeping/living in them. Good luck, and remember that time heals wounds, and memories live forever in your heart with Dusty reminding you of them.

It might make you feel better if you gave him a burial in the yard (if you live in a house) or made a little memorial for him. Put a picture of him and his favorite toy and maybe some of his favorite treat in a place where you can look at it and remember him whenever you want to. Considering how much you loved him it may take you a while before you are ready for another pet but you will know when the time is right.

You seem like a kind owner to care about your hamster so much.
Since you are a kind owner, you obviously gave Dusty a good life, and he must have enjoyed it.
"He who dies in despair has lived his whole life in vain"-Theodore Adorno
My favorite quote ever, it may help you get over Dusty.
You ask how to stop thinking about your hamster. Don't stop. You'll be in more pain later if you forget now.

Aww poor poor Dusty-(Great name!) I had a hamster called Bubbles and she died at two years old, I got a new hamster and forgot about her death and remembered all the happy times.
Just so you know you think 3 years is outstanding- my sister and I had a hamster each as a present and my sisters survived for a whopping 7years. I was so confused!!

I don't know how old you are (and I don't need to know), but if you're my daughter's age then I know how you feel. I'll bet your hamster had a good life. Put Dusty's picture in a picture frame on your desk; something small. One day you can put the picture away with other keepsakes and you'll come across it once in a while to remind you of something good; we all need that now and then.

DX. Let time roll it out. My hamster died last year, and I was pretty sad for a few days. As time goes by, you'll feel better. Never forget the memory of him though. He'll always be with you...

Its natural to feel sad. Maybe, as time goes by, you'll have another animal friend. After that, only the happy memories of the pet who died will remain.
