My daughter is nine months old and I bought her several books (for counting, colors, shapes, words, and alphabet) she can also chew on them easily. I got her two soft baby dolls for her to sleep and play with and a reading lion that has scrunchy pages in the book and different textures in it. I also got her a number puzzle (that is only meant to be played with with parental supervision) and some stuffed animals. I am not buying her clothes as the grandparents usually go overboard on that. I also wanted to start a collection of porcelein dolls for her and plan to buy a new one each year so that she will have a curio of collectables when she grows up. You can buy lots of little things like squeaky bath toys, books, and stuffed dolls/animals because she will start playing with them more and more as she gets older. Fisher price, Playskool, and Disney has a lot of neat baby stuff and though it may seem a bit early to buy those things, she will be playing with them sooner than you think. Also a play gym is a wonderful investment. My daughter still likes to play with hers. It's a Fisher Price Barnyard collection and she likes to pull the link-a-doos off.

This is pretty much the only year that you wont have to buy your baby anything. The first Birthday and Christmas is usually covered by friends and family. If you want to get your baby something. Get something that will mean something to you and your baby as well. Something that he/she could have as an adult or to look back on. Give with your heart. Material things at this age are really unimportant to your child and an expense that isn't warranted for you.

Hardcover books are always a great gift. The classics are great for all ages - Caps For Sale, The Little Engine That Could, Goodnight Moon, Brown Bear Brown Bear, etc.

If you want a toy, my kids love the Busy Ball Popper. The baby will enjoy the noise and movement and can grow into playing with it. It's great when they can sit by themselves.

Big plastic toys, things that are good to chew on, throw etc, because they will be doing it soon enough. A soft cuddly stuffed animal is also good but make sure it doesn't have any small parts. Parents are usually always more than happy to get clothes as long as you know the baby's size, because they get really expensive after awhile.

I am in the same boat as you. I have a three month old daughter and basically, getting the baby what you want is your best bet.
Things like rattles and things she can look at, and grasp onto. Things that are going to spark her interest.

I am getting my daughter the baby Einstein DVD collection

There's a lot of cute little toys on the market for that age that help them improve their motor skills. Things they can reach out and touch. Things that are interactive, hands-on. Just make sure there aren't any little pieces on them that can come off in their mouth and be swallowed, because at that age absolutely everything they put their hands they put in their mouth, as well.

Congratulations on your new daughter. We are expecting a brand new grandson in early January :-)

Here are a few ideas if you don't already have them: a bouncy chair (also called kick & play), a swing with a mobile that hangs down on it, the play mat that you lie them on and it has the stuff that hangs down over it, and Wal-Mart has the hand rattles that you put around there wrist and when they shake their arm it rattles. My daughter also loved little toys that you can turn on for them that has lights and sings.

Get the baby some clothes or something you need for the baby. At that young of an age... they won't care.
