Kitchen area needs new varnish but other areas of great room don't. Is is better to "feather" an indistinguishable break in an uneven diagonal or would it be better to start new varnish in a straight squared off junction at the end of a counter or up to a passageway?

Feather the edge making sure you don't go to far before lifting. Make sure you match the finish (high gloss, satin) this if properly done will never be noticed.

What ever way you do it it will be noticed. you can put a piece of floor trim over the place where they meet.
