city-state's that were individually governed and each had there own army. the 2 major were Athens and Sparta. Athens, the larger of the two is known for its advancements in culture while Sparta is known for its military focus

they lived in a democracy just like we do, but it wasn't a Representative democracy, so they could go to town meeting and government places and speak for themselves instead of having a Governor do it for them.
