Although you can safely use regular in a pinch, the performance and fuel economy will suffer significantly. The engine management system has a knock sensor that will prevent engine damage most of the time, but it does that by severely retarding the ignition timing. A side effect of that is that the engine tends to run hot; not a good thing at all. And performance SUCKS!

If I run premuim in my C-Class, I get around 30 MPG on the highway. On the one occasion that I had to fill it with regular, it plunged to around 18 MPG. And it ran like a dog with two broken legs -- VERY sluggish. The cost per mile for fuel is actually lower on premium that it is on regular.

Yes, you need premium fuel for your 2003 Mercedes C240.

Your engine is design to run premium fuel. The reason they used that is to provide the best performance for the engine and the car.

All mercedes sold in US at least from 1984-on (except the 1984 190e) need 91+octane. Any less and it can affect the knock senor creating poor performance and may void warranty on certain parts if buying a newer car.

Which engine? Open the glove box, pull out the manual. Read it. It will give you lots of information, including what grade of fuel to use.

All high quality cars, Benz included, run on premium. otherwise you may damage the cataylic converter. You could also damage the engine, because it is designed to run on the best gas available.
