A few things to consider:

Fullness of the tree
Length of the needles
Height of the tree

You can check how well the tree retains its needles by picking it up and plunking it back down on the ground (so its trunk hits the ground). You don't want there to be a lot of needles on the ground after you do that. It's best if it retain its needles well, so you know that when you go to decorate it, it's not going to lose a great deal of needles.

Also, walk around any tree you are considering to make sure it's healthy in appearance, all around it. Keep in mind that a long trunk can be trimmed.

There are different types of trees you will find when you are out looking. I searched the Internet to identify the types (fir, pine and spruce, and I'm including a link so you can discern the differences.

good green color ,flexable limb other wise soft,dont buy to early or will dry out befor christmas gets here. cut bottom about an inch and put in water (with coffee can (cover with sheet or material ,snow like) keep water up every day and becareful.(common sense)favorite ...douglas furr
