lol, i love that first answer. But actually in England they still say "Happy Christmas." So it might just be an american thing.

The practice became widespread only after around 1843, when the phrase appeared on the first Christmas card.

it was Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" that made it popular though.

In England it is still more common to say "Happy Christmas"

What version are you reading? I've always read that he says "Merry Christmas" in that poem. Happy Christmas is British.
