I had a friend who worked there for about a year. She didn't like it. They do make about $10 per hour, but you are working with about 3 students at once. That doesn't sound bad until you have an elementary student, middle school-er, and a high school student at once. She felt like she couldn't help them, because she was being torn from one to help another. She also complained of the hours. Some days she would go in from 10-1 and then go back from 4-8. I don't know about you , but I hate a broken work day.
If you really want to help a child one on one private tutoring can make you a lot of money. I have made anywhere from 15-25 an hour and get to know the individual. Depending on where you live you can make more. My relative makes 35 a hour and more. I really enjoy tutoring individual children and getting to know him/her and the family. There have been times I have helped a child to get help when it comes to testing for a disability. Sometimes parents need someone there to encourage them.

If you are interested in Sylvan it's your choice! You are making a good first step by researching. Good Luck!

My husband recently retired from teaching after 31 years. Fifteen years of that were in a junior high. He is currently teaching at Sylvan and loves it. He isn't responsible for the lesson planning, there's minimal paperwork, and employess higher in the food chain deal with the parents. He goes in, works with the kids and leaves; he doesn't bring home a stack of papers to grade. He regularly works with groups of two or three students. As far as getting to know students, how well do you get to know students when you see the typical jr/sr high class load of 150 -170 students in a day? And yes, Sylvan pays about $10/hour with no benefits.

I never worked there. Got offered a part-time job but when they told me it only paid $10/hr I turned them down. My school paid at least $20/hr for any extra stuff. And, I think it's all part-time, so no benefits.

Well, I never worked for them, but my brother WENT to them. They didn't help AT ALL. It was a waste of time and money. They declared him "graduated" and nothing had changed.
