If you want you can take your mom or a trusted friend with you. They can stand by you if you are that anxious. They won't see anything. Or you can have a nurse come in while the doctor is examining you to help ease your anxiety. Whichever makes you feel more comfortable.
Make a list of questions before you go so if you cannot remember them, you can refer to the list.
The nurse will take your blood pressure, height, weight, and ask you some questions. You will get undressed and put on a gown. The doctor will come in and ask you a few more questions. Then she will check your lungs and heart with a stethoscope. Have you lay down and check your breasts for lumps and show you how to self examine them yourself. Then you put your feet up in stirrups and she will examine you. A speculum is a piece of equipment used to put inside your vagina so the doctor can examine it and get a clear path to do a PAP smear swab. It may be uncomfortable and embarrassing, but it does not hurt and will be over in a few minutes. She will take this out and then proceed to push down on your stomach to check your ovaries and uterus. Then she will ask if you have any questions or concerns. (Get out your list.)
And that's it. You can do it. Once you know what to expect and have gone through it, your anxiety level will decrease for the next one.
Good luck to you!

Don't worry about it, it doesn't really hurt, it's more embarrassing than anything until you figure how many twats does a OB/GYN see everyday? I mean if you saw that many everday it would be NO big deal. So just relax, a good doc will let you know before they do anything. They usually press on your tummy to see if you have any lumps in your uterus, etc. Then they take a speculum (which dialates your cervix) and insert that (it's COLD but it doesn't really hurt, it may pinch sometimes though). They also take a swab and swab you with vinegar solution and take a pap smear (it doesn't hurt). Don't worry, it's no big deal. You should be fine! :)
Also, if you keep talking to the doc, it will keep your mind off of everything and make it go faster.

It's not a big deal. I work in family planning and I would suggest you tell your doctor that it's your first exam and to walk you through it. If a doctor tells you what he/she is doing each step of the way, it feels easier. They'll start with a breast exam and then may do a pelvic exam. They'll put a couple of fingers into your vagina and bear down a little bit...just relax. It's not comfortable but it doesn't hurt. Next, they'll put the speculum into your vagina and open it up. That way, the doctor can see inside you to make sure everything is normal and to be able to take some cell samples from your cervix. It's a little wire brush that looks like a nipple brush for cleaning baby bottles. Again, it shouldn't hurt if you just relax.
Breathe a lot, talk to your doctor while the exam is going on, and you'll be great. I love my gyno...she's really funny and nice...so I now actually enjoy being able to chat with her about family planning stuff while she does my exam! You'll be great!

You'll hate it forever. I'm almost 40 and still hate it. Just think positive, relax, take deep cleansing breaths, and do exactly what the obgyn tells you. It's a temporary situation that only lasts a few minutes once a year. Make a list of questions you want to ask and take it with you so you don't forget anything. Be honest in the questions they ask you. It can help determine anything that may happen.

It is a very awkward experience. Do you have a close friend or family member to go with you? Just try to be calm, it's really not that bad. Remember, this is the doctor's job. They do this everyday allday and have seen it all! Let the doctor know this is your first time and you are nervous.
good luck, look at it this way, it's for your own good, and you are making sure everything is ok. Boy, what us women have to go through! lol

Does not matter how many times you do it you will always hate it and be nervous when you go.
I am 50 and I HATE going. I would rather go to the Dentist and I HATE that too!
Just play mind games before you go and realize it will be over soon.
