That is a great question. The atomic number of an element is the number of protons that element contains. I assume that you would be aware of the fact that an atom contains a nucleus and electrons surrounding it. The nucleus contains sub-nuclear particles called protons (+vely charged) and neutrons (neutral). It is this 'number of protons' that we call as the atomic number of each element. For example, Hydrogen has one proton and has the atomic number 1, sodium has eleven protons and has atomic number 11. Hope this is clear enough. :)

Because in a stable atom the number of protons, which are positively charged, and the number of electrons, which are negatively charged, are equal (makeing it neutral), the atomic number can also represent the number of electrons. But by deffinition, it is the number of protons
