I really think Dell and HP are your best bets. They have some really nice sub-$1000 notebook computers. If you go with Dell, be sure and search (google) for 'coupon codes' before checking out. I have never paid retail for a Dell computer, there is always a coupon code that saves you a significant amount of money. I personally like the Dell 1505 (http://www.dell.com/content/products/pro... ) and HP Pavilion (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shoppi... ).

I'm a software engineer and I've had a Inspiron 8600 for 2.5 years now, use it every single day, and not one single problem. My wife has had an HP Pavilion going on 1 year, uses it every single day, and the only problem she has is sometimes losing here wireless connection after coming out of hibernation.

As far as the size of the hard drive, 40 Gigabytes or 100 gigabytes, it depends on how many big files you work with. If you will likely have many video files and such, get the 100GB. As far as Internet connectivity, all new laptops come with wireless (wi-fi) internal cards that make it easy.

Also, you may catch some Christmas deals over the next week.

Good luck.

The hard disk is where programs and data are stored. They are usually at least 80 GB these days. You will need a large hard disk if your are storing a large amount of music and videos.
