In the diagram, 4 out of 5 of the circle is shaded and 2 out of 3 of the triangle is shaded.
What is the ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the triangle?

"4 out of 5 of the circle is shaded", so the circle is divided in 5 parts.

"2 out of 3 of the triangle is shaded", so the triangle is divided in 3 parts.

"..the ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the triangle" is:
c/t = 5/3

1/5 of the circle is not shaded.
1/3 of the triangle is not shaded.
These areas, as shown in the diagram, are the same!
Hence 1/3 of the triangle = 1/5 of the area of the circle
Hence the whole area of the triangle = 3/5 of the area of the circle.
Hence the ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the triangle = 5:3

8/15 because you cross multiply 4/5 x 2/3 = 8/15
