I have 4 belly button piercings, and they've all been done over 4 years ago. I've never had any problems with any of them, so I'll try to help you out as much as I can. :)
1. It hurts, yes. It's a needle being pushed through your skin.
However, it's not THAT bad. And it only takes a second. If it hurt that much, no one would ever get it done. And the last time I checked, just about everyone I know has it done.
It's really quick. Hold your breath, squeeze someone's hand, it will be over before you know what happened!!
2. I have never done this myself, but I did go swimming in a pool... which you aren't supposed to do, but it seemed to help mine heal a bit. :)
Salt water is recommended to help clean and heal piercings, however, the salt water in the sea is probably a bit dirty and unsanitary if you really think about it...
I'm not going to tell you that you "can't" go into the sea, but what I will recommend is cleaning it properly AS SOON as you get out!
3. I live in the USA, so unfortunately I can't really answer this question. I would think it's possible that some shops will pierce you as long as you are at least 16, and have a parent with you. :)
4. They use a needle. Do not EVER go to anyone who says they do their piercings with a gun, ESPECIALLY a belly button piercing. That's just a big problem waiting to happen.
They'll draw a dot on your skin where you decide the piercing will look the best, then they use a pair of clamps, that are shaped something like a pair of scissors, and they'll put them on the flap of skin that is going to be pierced.
Usually, these are put on rather tightly, and they're pinching you, so you almost don't feel the actual piercing at all!! It's kind of nice!
Then they'll put the needle through very quickly, and push it out with the belly button ring. As soon as they put the ball on the ring, you're all done!!
One other thing... It is usually best to have it done with a captive bead ring (CBR) rather than a belly button barbell, simply because it makes it MUCH easier to clean, since you can move it around more, and it heals faster that way.
No matter what type of jewelry you have in, there is always a risk of it getting caught on something, so you just have to learn to always be careful! :)
Good luck!! :)

Mine didn't hurt, but the girl in front of me cried. It feels kinda like getting your ears pierced except there's no noise. No you can not go into the sea a week afterwards (I think they told me no swimming for 4 weeks, but I can't remember it was so long ago). I don't know what the UK rules are because I live in the US, but I was 15 and had my mother's permission. They use a needle and it's really quick. I laid down on the table and the guy bent over and stood up. I looked down and their was a needle in my belly it was actually pretty cool. I flexed my abs and made it wobble. Make sure to keep it clean with Bactine or something similar. Don't use peroxide because it will dry it out.

1. It does not hurt. I did not believe people when they told me that, but it really doesn't. They sue this clamp thing and they clamp it so the nerves can't send the pain mesages to your brain. So, you don't feel the pain, but don't look when they are doing it.
2.Salt water does help your belly button to heal but make sure you clean it afterwards because the ocean water isnot clean.
3. I am not sure.
4.They use a needle. Its curved and they put it through and then they put in the bely button ring.
And extra advice... Get just a regular barbell. Don't get the hoop or the swirly kind when you get it pierced because it will be tender and the hoop and swirly one get caught on things easily and get ripped out a lot easier!

yes any piercing can be painful but the belly is esp b/c you actually pierce skin not cartlidge, you should be able to go in to ocean immediately after most piercers in the US suggest sea salt or saline to clean the piercing with, a reputable piercer will use a needle (should be 14g) and i do not know about the age in UK.

Would not recommend going to sea 1 week after the procedure. You will want to be near your family doctor if you get an infection.
