I'm asking because I heard that I should add 1/2 white vinegar to the final rinse cycle of each load of laundry, but I'm not sure as to what the vinegar is supposed to do. Also, I'm wondering if the laundry will then smell like vinegar.

One half cup of white vinegar added from the beginning to middle of your rinse cycle will not make your clothes smell of vinegar. In fact vinegar has a quality of absorbing and neutralizing odors, so your cloths should come out smelling fresh and clean. Vinegar is used to set colors in many fabric dying processes. I wouldn't worry about it affecting colors unless you are washing hand-made fabrics. If you purchase hand-made fabrics in the future (including those made from hand dyed yarn) ask about the vinegar just to be sure.

Vinegar also has a little known quality of releasing the glue lice use to hold their eggs in place, so if lice are a problem in your area, this can be an extra bonus. (Diluted vinegar also makes a great hair rinse.) Vinegar is a great grease cutter too. Add a half cup, and then after agitating in the hottest water your fabrics can stand stop your washer and let the fabrics soak for an hour or two. Wash as usual and finish with a half cup of vinegar in the rinse.

The vinegar helps get any detergent residue out of the fabrics. This makes them softer and brighter. Your clothes will not smell vinegary at all. You can use up to 1 cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle.

It makes your clothes softer and brighter, I have done this for years and no the clothes will not smell like vinegar. It really works and is a great alternative to using fabric softener and is cheaper too. Any kind of detergent is effective if properly used. Good Luck!

it helps reduce static cling...I don't think it makes much of a smell...I used this on my daughter's cloth diapers when she was tiny and it worked great (fabric softener is not good on baby diapers as it may cause a rash)

All is as good as any other detergent you might buy...
