As a fully trained Zoologist with 10 years practical experience I can tell you that basically it's due to the size and weight of their enormous b ollocks.
Their b ollocks act like a pendulum and if they deviate from walkin a straight line the ant directly behind them kicks them right up the old scrot and probably inflicts so much pain on the meat and two veg region that they stop misbehaving.

Ants don't always walk in straight lines. Forager ants wander around aimlessly by themselves in search of food, taking into account various landmarks, the position of the sun, and the position of earth's magnetic field in relation to where they are and where the nest is. That way when the ant finds food, it knows the exact direction back to the nest. As it walks a (roughly) straight line back to the nest it sprays a trail of acetic acid behind it so the other ants can smell the path to the food.

You are a keen observer......but not quite keen enough.
When you look at ants, sometimes they walk in straight lines and sometimes not.
Watch the ones that do very closely and you will always see another ant off to the side a little way, standing still.
The answer is that the "straight walking" ant is undergoing a field sobriety test.

Ants will often follow a trail laid down by a foraging ant on its return to the nest, this tells the others there is food at the end, it is one of the reasons it is important to clean up sugar spills especially in the warmer months otherwise you will become over run with foraging ants. If you rub your finger across the line they will wander around confused, until they pick up the trail again.
