On the surface, Americans are proud of their democratic values. Yet, our society lives under the tiranny of a fraudulent legal system, favored by a corrupt Congress linked to special interest groups, especially the American Trial Lawyers Association. The turn over rate in Congress is lower than the old Russian Politburo.

Modernization of the political system does not happen because there are no term limits in congress. Political parties become captive to a few and so the choices become more limited as time goes by. The older I get the easier it is to find examples of the masses being led to the slaughter believing that politicians care. The only concern of most politicians is that their payoffs arrive in time. The rise in Media influences has finalized the demise of this country.

I would rather be under Democracy in America which has been going since 1783.When we defeated the British
under King George III. We don't really appreciate our freedom, like we should. Remember Russia just became a democracy in the 1980.But they are slowly going back to socialism again. We have checks and balances in our democracy. We also have the ability to change Congress
like we just did in the 2006 elections It will take time but we always change.I love America ,it is better here than any other country in the world. Remember the great presidents we have had in 1783 and be thankful for that.

I like your question, but I disagree that on the surface Americans are proud of our democratic values. I think that there was a time when that was true, but that era is past. I don't know to many people who think we live in a democratic state, in fact I can count them on one hand.
I think that on the surface Americans are confused, oppressed, bored and in the dark. Under that surface we're quarrelers, we're divided, we all work daily against the wrong people, each other. Also, so many people in my generation are being conditioned to believe that the all mighty dollar is god and that's what really bothers me. If that attitude gains more ground within the next decade (and it will) then all is lost. Democracy is dying on the operating table, and we don't know anything about medicine, just how much it costs.

True Democracy exists somewhere, but never has in America.

It a nice thought but we would not have lasted this long as a nation had we been truly democratic.
If we are not careful, we will soon be more Socialist than anything.

I think that the US is a Democratic Republic if it had to be "termed", but just Democracy...Can you say chaos?

Democracy, in the classical sense, NEVER existed in america. The founding fathers didn't want a country based on majority rule. That's why they created the electoral college, senate and that was also part of the reason why judicial review was created.

EDIT: darn, ninja'd by gonzofever

EDIT the second: lol gonzofever, you have no idea how many people I have arguments with about stuff like this when they're missing the basic facts.

America is closer to being a Fascism or a Theocracy than a Democracy. Look how the parties rely on corporations and all the politicians are into big business, that's not how a democracy should work!

To answer your original question: Democracy (literally "rule by the people", from the Greek demos, "people," and kratos, "rule") is a form of government for a nation state, or for an organization in which all the citizens have an equal vote. The rest is just a rant.

Your statement on current affairs aside, you seem to miss that America is and always has been a republic, NOT a democracy. Jefferson rightly warned of Democracy and the tyranny of the uneducated masses that would follow.

EDIT Sorry Greg lol. didn't mean to ninja ha ha. But it's good to know at least someone else knows what it's really all about is't it?

I think we have a semi-democracy. Democracy by nature means one person, one vote. However, in presidential elections, we have electoral colleges that make our choice for us. A president can win the popular vote, but lose overall because the "more intelligent" electoral colleges choose the other. I understand why this originally occured--the common man WAS uneducated and it was too difficult to count up an entire nation of votes. But, with the huge number of college graduates and the rise in technological abilities, the electoral colleges are archaic and should be eliminated.

Democracy in AMerica exists, however it is not a perfect democracy. Like all Human institutions and ideas, they are not perfect yet, this is the best we have. We have to make the most of it. I'd rather live under this gov't than to live under a tyrannical gov't like that of North Korea.
