I think asking is OK, EXPECTING is not. With some friends I sort of ask half-seriously, sometimes I mention things I know they could get, sometimes things they obviously can't afford and wouldn't expect unless they won the lottery.
My family always makes lists for each other although we DON'T have to get something or anything from it. I guess it's a little bit lame but we've been doing it for more than 30 years.
I asked my friend for a wallet, boxer shorts, and something I can't say here on a G website.
And of course I could always use Love and Peace on Earth.

LOL My husband loves when I ask for something in particular.
I wait until I'm asked. Mainly, my mom and my husband both will ask what I want, and I'll tell them then.
I don't bring it up first, though.
And I think the gift registeries for Christmas or birthdays is beyond rude and selfish.

Asking for gifts is a normal part of birthdays and Christmas and such. But wording is careful, don't demand anything and be happy with whatever you may receive

what I really want will never get so instead will ask for the new C.D. collection of " The Shadow Radio shows " to complete my collection.
